Using SAR (System Activity Reporter) in Linux

When you are managing a Linux system there would be many cases where you will need to know the historical information about the System/Server. To know what happened at that particular time.

SAR is one of the utilities which records and provides such information.

It comes along with the Unix Performance monitoring utility systat.

To install systat (Debian/Ubuntu)

To install systat (RHEL/CentOS)

Enabling Systat


Restart the service using

By Default, the history will be kept for 7days. If needed change the option under

also, the above configuration file have options like

to find information about particular date use

where <05> is the date.

For Complete Statistics use

For CPU Statistics

For Memory Usage

Memory usage of particular date

For Swap usage
